POETRY CORNER: UNSEEN AMONGST BY MEMORY MASAKARA

Unseen amongst
They fly merrily high in the skies
None of them reminiscences the remnants of yesterday
None of them dreads what tomorrow births
They make joyful music all day undisturbed
None worries about the noise
For a moment l too felt like one of them
Then reality brought me back to the scraps and rags around me
The cracked lips and dry skin
The coiled and kinky short hair
I'm definitely not one of them
They swim gaily to the shores
I watch the water dribble from their slithery bodies
The sun shines on them
An amazing sight to behold
I too wish to join them
But that would be a rat race
I daydream of the wonderful adventures
The thought of what could have been
The undeniable connection
The unspoken words
The unbreakable bond
But reality knocks me off my trailing thoughts
I can't be one of them
My tattered clothes and shoes,
My facial features haphazard
My voice trembles and l trail frequently
A meaningful sentence l can't make
I'm a sight unpleasant
